PORTOBELLO ROAD : Every week around 10,000 people visit Portobello Road's amazing market, it's been like that for over 50 years. It is one of London's most famous streets and Alan Carter grew up there during the 40s, 50 and 60s.

At that time Portobello was full of danger from Teddy Boys, razor gangs, muggers (cosh boys), street fights, race riots, neo-Nazis, slum landlords and spivs. Not to mention the hardened criminals and killers.

Also during this time the antiques and collectables industry throughout England exploded into being and attarcted buyers from all over the world.

This book is a personal view fo how all these elements grew to become an internationally recognised attraction. Alan was there, he saw it all first hand and played his own part and knew most of the 'names'.

This is not a history book, it is a narrative of an amazing phenomenon that will never happen again. It is also a very amusing read, with over 100 specially commissioned illustrations.
