This year marks one hundred years since the inception of Great Britain’s Royal Air Force, the creation of which began during the First World War following parliamentary approval to separate operational command from the Navy in November 1917. The subsequent amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service to form the RAF on 1 April 1918 established the world’s first air force independent of army or naval control.
When the Great War ended, the service was reduced significantly, and during the inter-war years only minor operations were undertaken, before a period of development in the build-up to the Second World War. WW2 saw some of the more iconic RAF campaigns, such as the Battle of Britain and, later, many of the bombing campaigns including the ingenious Dambusters raid. Many of the great pilots, crew and aircraft were, and still are, household names.
