North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. For East Coast surfers, this region represents both heaven and hell in the beachbreak bible. Heaven being the specks of sand that have congregated up to 30 miles (48km) offshore to form the crescent of slender barrier islands known as the Outer Banks. This is where the Atlantic throws up the biggest and most consistent swells year-round. The continental shelf is as narrow as it gets off the Outer Banks, but unfortunately for Georgia, some 400 miles (644km) south, this same shelf is at its maximum swell destroying width. South Carolina shares more similarities to Georgia than North Carolina.
