Back in action
Recently I did something wildly reckless and dangerous: I picked up a laundry basket full of clothes. Punishing me for my wilful neglect, my lower back responded as though I had attempted an acrobatic Cirque du Soleil audition with no training or warm-up.
Since then, I seem to be challenging the 30-years-into-the-future me that we at Prevention are all about avoiding. There’s been the old-lady shuffling. The delicate lowering onto chairs and strange sound effects every time I stand up. Not to mention the whimpering at the thought of how I’m going to get my underpants on.
The whole experience has been an ‘interesting’ reminder that pain – whether it’s a dodgy back, stiff knees, tight hips or the mysterious shoulder issue you’ve simply learnt to live with – has…

Sunday SERVICE
There’s something powerful about reclaiming your Sunday. Instead of letting it slip by in a blur of chores, a more intentional end to the week can leave you feeling calmer and clearer.
That’s the idea behind The Sunday Reset by Sophie Golding (Vie, $19.95), which explores how a dedicated reboot day can help you recharge, restart and refocus. Here are some simple ways to put it into practice:
✤ Clear your calendar. Ask yourself: “Is this an essential task, something I truly need or want to do?” If the answer is no, cancel it and delete it.
✤ Give next week a theme. “It’ll make it more interesting, fun and motivating,” says Sophie. Think‘deep work’, or ‘less consuming, more creating’.
✤ Do future you a favour. Ask yourself: “What one…
Health
Use sit or lose it
We’ve been told for years that sitting too much is bad for our health. But, in a review of data from a million people across 30 countries, University of Queensland researchers found that the type of sitting we do matters. While passive sitting such as watching TV is linked with negative cognitive and memory outcomes, active sitting can help preserve executive function, memory and cognitive flexibility. Active sitting includes reading, playing cards, doing puzzles, using a computer, driving or any other activity that stimulates the mind. The study authors note that regular exercise is still essential and this doesn’t mean we should sit more, but keeping our minds active when we’re sitting may help keep cognitive decline and dementia at bay.…
Human nurture
Feeling lonely? Stepping outside could be the perfect antidote. Research by the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show reveals that Australians who spend more than 20 hours outdoors each week are twice as likely to feel socially connected compared with those who get out for less than two hours. And those who garden regularly are among the least lonely people in the country. With nearly half of Aussies saying they feel socially disconnected or lonely at least a few times a week, spending time in nature may be one of the simplest and most affordable remedies.
Double jeopardy
Having both excess belly fat and low muscle mass can increase your risk of death by 83 per cent, say Brazilian and UK scientists. Known as sarcopenic obesity, it creates a vicious…
What’s up with… A SIDE STITCH
You might be jogging, playing squash or sprinting to make a bus when you suddenly double over with a pain on your side, right below your rib cage. Not to worry: This ‘stitch’ is generally harmless – and, despite what your mum may have told you, has nothing to do with being dehydrated or out of shape. Still, until it passes, it can stop you cold.
THE STITCH SITCH
Technically called exercise-related transient abdominal pain, a stitch is most likely caused by irritation of the parietal peritoneum, which is the membrane that lines the abdominal wall, says orthopaedic surgeon Dr William Workman. “While running or doing other activities that involve repetitive upper-body motion, the abdominal organs can tug on this membrane, and the resulting friction produces that sharp, localised pain,”…
‘BAD’ habits we can keep
This time of year always seems to come with a side order of guilt. As the ‘mid-season grind’ begins to settle in (hello, tax time), we often beat ourselves up over that sugary or kJ-loaded hit to get us though a frenzied afternoon. But real health isn’t about restriction – it’s about rhythm, joy and the small, sustainable habits that make us feel good every day. So, here are seven healthy habits you definitely don’t need to ditch right now.
▶ Your morning coffee
Moderate coffee drinking is firmly on the ‘keep’ list. Studies show that two to four cups a day is linked with lower risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers. The antioxidants in coffee can help protect cells from damage, and caffeine, in moderation,…
Clear the pipes
At this time of year especially, you may find yourself drowning in a sea of postnasal drip and sinus congestion, and no amount of nose-blowing or phlegmy coughing seems to stem the snot. When being stuffed up makes it harder to breathe or taste, or you develop a sinus infection and the pressure makes you feel as if your skull is being crushed in a vice, it’s time to do something other than dab at your nose with a tissue.
Almost no one escapes congestion entirely, and it rears its head particularly during sick season and/or if you suffer from environmental or seasonal allergies. Thankfully, there are things you can try at home that may help you find relief.
Congestion happens when your nasal lining makes excess mucus. Despite the…
