“THERE WAS A GENUINE AIR OF UNCERTAINTY AT LIV INDY.”
There was something different about the final LIV Golf event of 2026. For a league that arrived four years ago promising to revolutionise the professional side of the sport, LIV Golf Indianapolis felt less like the culmination of a grand plan and more like a crossroads.
As Garrett Johnston reports in this issue, there was a genuine air of uncertainty at the event, with players, officials and journalists wondering the same thing: would LIV even be back in 2027? The Public Investment Fund had pulled the plug on its financial support, there was talk of a new investor, and yet plenty of questions remained about what that investment was contingent upon and how many of LIV’s 54 players would actually need to remain.
Garrett’s reporting makes for fascinating reading because…
A FAMILY AFFAIR
There was another trophy to add to Scottie Scheffler’s remarkable collection, but this was a moment that went beyond another victory.
After completing his final round at East Lake Golf Club and securing the 2026TOUR Championship, Scheffler was joined on the 18th green by his wife, Meredith and their young sons, Bennett and Remy. With the trophy in hand and his family by his side, the world No. 1 had the perfect backdrop to celebrate another extraordinary season.…
7 MILE BEACH
There are no mammoth entry signs or imposing gates announcing your arrival at one of Australia’s newest and most talked-about golf courses.
The approach is marked by a few understated pointers. After passing through a gate into the 7 Mile Beach precinct, a marker reveals the course is two kilometres away, then another arrow directs you towards check-in.
Then the golf course reveals itself. The contrast is striking. The subtlety of the entranceway and arrival leads to a landscape of enormous scale, where giant sand dunes, native grasses and the ocean combine to create an environment unlike almost anything else in Australian golf.
Perhaps it is appropriate, then, that Mike Clayton - who along with fellow designer Mike DeVries delivered the course, a dream driven by decades of desire from…
Tasmania’s newest gem already has Ponting’s heart
It took mere minutes on the ground at the County Club Tasmania and seeing what was taking shape for Ricky Ponting to sign on the dotted line.
The Australian cricket legend and golf tragic, who has a collection of used clubs so large, he needed to put them in a storage unit when he last moved home, is an enthusiastic and excited ambassador for the Country Club’s brand new $30m Championship Course, which will be open on December 12.
It marks another significant entry into not just the Australian golfing circuit, but more particularly the Tamanian circuit, which is fast becoming the hottest for destination golfers, both locally and internationally.
The Country Club was already a special place for Ponting, not because it’s located in Launceston where he was born,…
Transgender rules shift
Governing body Golf Australia has said it has created a more open pathway for transgender and gender diverse athletes to play club competitions, while tightening the process to compete at the elite level.
A review of the policy established in 2016, which placed bans on any transgender female players who went through male puberty competing in elite women’s events, has resulted in changes which officials believe maintain golf as “inclusive for all”.
Key to the updates is a new application process for transgender athletes to compete in women’s and girls’ “scratch” events, which include amateur and professional events run by GA, as well as pennant competitions.
Applications from transgender players to compete would have to be lodged six weeks in advance of any scratch competition and meet strict medical guidelines,…
CHRIS RUTHERFORD: STILL DEMONSTRATING
In the world of the PGA professional, they often talk about the “grind” – the endless hours on the range, the journey of coaching every beginner, the discipline required to turn a hobby into a career. For Chris Rutherford, that grind has lasted nearly four decades and taken him from the tournament circuit to the pro shop, from building a brand-new resort from scratch to mentoring the next generation of juniors.
Long before he became a fixture on the Brisbane coaching scene, Chris Rutherford was a full-time tournament professional. He joined the Australian PGA as a full member in 1987 and spent seven years competing on various tours, recording a sixth-place finish at the 1989 Ford Open along with a number of other strong results.
When his playing days wound…
“THE AUTHORITIES’ ABILITY TO SUCK THE LIFE OUT OF ANYTHING FUN IS PEERLESS”
A few things in golf have long been mysteries to this longtime practitioner.
Making solid contact when faced with a 70-yard, three-quarter wedge shot. Why people enjoy watching the eternal Patrick Cantlay play. Why anyone ever liked the game’s most despicable luggage carrier, Steve Williams. Drawing the ball from right-to-left using one of those frying-pan metal-headed drivers. Putting well on slow greens. The course set-up philosophy of the United States Golf Association.
Those sorts of things have always perplexed this observer.
Hang on, though. Perhaps the biggest enigma in all of golf is why some people search for fairness in what is an inherently unfair game. And when I say “some people”, I’m really talking about our too-often pedantic American chums. Some of the things Uncle Sam’s nieces and nephews have…

40 Years in the Making: THE ENDURING LEGACY OF RIVERSIDE OAKS GOLF RESORT
From Greg Norman’s helicopter arrivals and Australian PGA drama to floods, rebirth and a new generation of golfers, Riverside Oaks Golf Resort has experienced just about everything a golf resort can. Four decades on, its story is one of ambition, survival and a venue that has continued to forge its brilliant path in Australian golf.
There were few bigger decades in Australian golf than the 1980s. The sport was thriving beyond belief; Greg Norman was the biggest name in the game, and ambitious developers were looking to build the country’s next great golf destination.
It was against that backdrop that Riverside Oaks Golf Resort emerged at Cattai, alongside the Hawkesbury River about 60 minutes northwest of Sydney, with a vision that stretched well beyond a golf course.
In 1986, developer…
WORLDS APART, FITTED THE SAME
The real estate axiom of location, location, location played more than a strong role in one of Titleist’s biggest projects in Australia.
At Nudgee Golf Club in Brisbane, minutes from the airport and highways linking it to the entire state, Titleist has installed what it believes to be the best purpose-built, state-of-the-art fitting facility not just in Queensland, but in the country.
Heralded as the ultimate personal fitting experience, golfers of all levels and abilities are treated exactly like tour players, offered the same hands-on, indepth experience with the same process, equipment and fitting technology that the best players in the world rely on. That isn’t just a boast, as on the day of the official opening in Brisbane, Golf Australia magazine staff were treated to a driver fitting experience…
