ON THIS DAY...David Bowie released Heroes as a single.

It was on this day in 1977 that the late musical legend David Bowie declared: ‘we can be heroes, if just for one day’.

Written with Brian Eno during the Thin White Duke’s ‘Berlin’ period, the song tells the story of two lovers, one from East and one from West Berlin.

Though not a hugely successful track on its release – it reached number 11 in the Australian chart – Heroes has gone on to become the second most frequently covered Bowie song (after Rebel Rebel) and features heavily on ‘greatest songs of all time’ compilations and lists, proving the enduring spirit, not just of this perfectly-crafted anthem, but the great man himself.
