We share lots of inspiration in this issue! Our projects include hand and machine made quilts, traditional and original designs and many different techniques.
You can make a traditional quilt based on the Glorified Nine Patch block by hand. It features large blocks that make the curves easier to manage and the quilt makes up faster. Chris Jurd shares another captivating quilt that features vintage hand made embroideries. Cheryl Filby shows the instructions for another of her original machine pieced and appliquéd quilts.
From September 2025 through to March 2026, the American Folk Art Museum shared an exhibition that included some rare quilts and revealed the natural history of American textiles. We share a look inside the display and the provenance of these vital quilts.

Presented through an ecological lens, the exhibition traced the intricate relationships between the environment and traditional quilting practices.
The groundbreaking inquiry into the natural history of American textiles offered an eco-critical perspective on global material culture, from the early American republic through to the 20th century.
Moving beyond the individual quiltmaker, An Ecology of Quilts examined the origins of textile production and its influence on the artistry of quiltmaking. It explored the environmental and social impact of cultivating and harvesting raw materials; the vast trade networks that transported dyestuffs, fibres and fabrics across land and sea; and the technologies and industrial innovations…
