BROADCAST
G’DAY and thanks for grabbing the August 2024 issue of Street Machine. This month we’ve revived a long-forgotten section of the mag called ‘You Wish’, where we review various toys that appeal to gearheads. In the past, we’ve reviewed new performance cars, motorcycles, and a few fettled late-model hotties, but we could be inclined to include utes, tow vehicles, off-road toys or whatever is of interest to you lot. If there’s anything in particular you’d like to see put through its paces in You Wish, be sure to let us know.
This issue, we’ve taken Harley-Davidson’s new X500 for a spin. It’s a nifty little entrylevel LAMS bike that, along with its X350 little brother, represents Harley’s renewed attack on the learner segment. Check out my thoughts on page 12.
This issue’s…

There’s also a stack of very tough six-cylinders entered, including a handful that are running deep in the sevens.
Of course, Drag Challenge isn’t just about the heavy hitters, and as always, a fleet of crazy home-brewed creations are lined up for a week of fun, including a brutal turbo 4A-GE-powered Corolla running in Tuff Mounts 235 Blown,…
HOT GOSSIP
ON YER BIKE!
JOHNNY Pilla is a man of many talents. Not only is he one of Australia’s leading engine builders and frontman of Powerhouse Engines, but he’s also the frontman of a rock band! If that ain’t cool enough, he recently competed in – and completed – Australia’s most gruelling off-road motorcycle race, the legendary Finke Desert Race. The two-day, 400-plus-kilometre run from Alice Springs to Finke and back takes place over the most desolate and challenging terrain Australia has to offer. John had a big off at one stage, but emerged unscathed to finish 14th in his class. On ya, Johnny! Photos: Red Hot Shotz

X-FACTOR
HARLEY-Davidson is perhaps the most hallowed name in motorcycling, but since the demise of its Street 500 model in 2021, the brand hasn’t offered a LAMS-compliant bike with beginners in mind. Happily, that changed late last year with the introduction of the X350 and X500 models.
I was recently offered a ride of the larger of the two bikes, the X500, and was keen to find out what sort of Harley $11,495 buys you in 2024.
First up, it’s a good-lookin’ rooster, though the smaller (and cheaper), flat track-inspired X350 is arguably more handsome again. Despite being heavily derived from the Benelli Leoncino 500, the X500’s styling has been refined from the tank through to the seat and rear guard to give off a vibe somewhat reminiscent of Harley’s XL1200 Roadster. Still,…
JAYDEN GRAY
WE HAPPENED upon Jayden Gray’s beautiful, nitrous-huffing ’68 Camaro at Northern Nats back in May, and we knew we had to find out more. We tracked Jayden down for a chat about the car and his time on the tools putting it together.
Tell us about your ride, Jayden.
It’s a 1968 SS Camaro running a 406ci Dart small-block Chev with a transbraked Powerglide. It’s mini-tubbed and still sits on leaf springs in the rear. It’s a street-and-strip combo with a nitrous kit, and it runs in the nines with a 150-shot of gas. I bought it in 2017 when I was on my P-plates; that’s when my old man got me into cars. The body and interior were stock, but the foundations were there; it had a small-block and Powerglide fitted.…

THERE’S something about the loose nature of a 1970s-era flick that warms my heart, and the opening scenes of Speedtrap quickly drew a smile of satisfaction from me. The private investigator was a…

TO A TEE
HI TEAM! I’m just writing to say I absolutely loved the cover of the July issue. The cartoon-style tribute to the great Rob Beauchamp was an all-timer, one I hope you guys put on a poster or some kind of merchandise in the future.
Keep up the great work!
Jeff Aikmann, email
HEY Jeff! Thanks for the kind words. And you’re in luck! In collaboration with the Beauchamp family, we’ve developed a limited run of T-shirts (pictured right) featuring that cover image by Pat Skinner of Ten Tenths Creative, depicting Rob’s legendary Calais and Torana builds. The shirts are only available via pre-order, which closes at midnight on Wednesday 31 July, so scan the QR code to secure yours! All profits will be donated to the Leukaemia…
COYOTE HOWLS
JIM Menelaou’s obsession with second-gen Aussie Falcons began at the tender age of 10, when he went for a ride in a rowdy XW owned by his older brother’s mate. “I remember everything so clearly; the whole experience,” Jim says. “I was obsessed and started doing my research, and quickly figured out that I liked the front and rear end of the XY better.”
Six short years later, Jim was the proud owner of a 302-powered XY Fairmont – the one you see here, albeit now made over as a Falcon GT tribute. Like any good P-plater, he quickly laid waste to the factory diff, which got him accustomed to engine and driveline swaps.
Jim breaks his XY’s evolution into five key stages: a standard car while on his P-plates; an engine…
HARD RATED
WHILE Dale Millican’s HR ute is a cut above his previous rides, he’s certainly no stranger to rad HR Holdens. Starting with a home-built, Chev-powered ute 30 years ago, he later put together a tough small-block Prem cruiser, before rescuing this ute from a paddock in Dalby, Queensland in pursuit of something greater. “I just love the shape and body lines,” he enthuses. “And you don’t really see them done to this level.”
Dale moves earth for a crust these days, but he was a panel beater in a past life, so he sand-blasted the HR at home before it went to Shane Rowe at Southern Rod & Custom for tubs and a four-link, with the intention to then bring it back home and finish the rest of the car himself.…
WINTER WARMERS
DRAMA and drag racing have long gone hand in hand, both on- and off-track. But heading into the 56th Winternationals at Willowbank Raceway, the main cause of concern was the track surface itself.
Willowbank had been closed since last August as part of an $11 million upgrade. This included ripping up most of the old bitumen track surface, as well as redoing the staging lanes and start-up area, adding spectacular new lighting, conducting major drainage works, and more. The scope of the project was huge, with 2500 tonnes of concrete laid down from the 660-foot mark to 50 metres beyond the finish line, but the end result is Australia’s third all-concrete quarter-mile, joining Sydney Dragway and South Australia’s Dragway at the Bend.
The plan was to have the strip ready to re-open…
