It’s the case that stopped the nation. In fact, ever since the verdict in the Erin Patterson mushroom murder trial was handed down last week, it seems media across the globe are more obsessed than ever with the story that centres around a beef Wellington and a lunch with a tragic end. This week, as the small Victorian town of Korumburra continues to make international headlines, we’ve put together a special report on the trial that had
Australia – and the world – gripped for the past 11 weeks, as a jury deliberated over arguably the most talked about crime our country has seen in decades (page 8). We also take a look at what’s next for Patterson as she begins her jail time as a convicted killer.

A Happy Family... For Now?
PLAYING NICE! Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom’s reps have officially confirmed their split, but on July 3, the pair were spotted enjoying a family holiday in Italy, with their daughter Daisy, four, and his son Flynn, 14.
While Katy, 40, and Orlando, 48, are currently doing their very best to amicably co-parent, things could soon become more tense, claims a source.
“They still have much to figure out,” an insider tells New Idea. “From their house in Montecito, to their dogs, expensive artworks and even the random knick-knacks they both want. It’s a nightmare because nothing is clearly divided, and as they were never married, everything is in a messy grey area.”
Katy and Orlando were a couple for nine years, after meeting at a Golden Globes party in 2016.…
Farewell Emmie
For almost seven years, Emmie Silbery entertained fans on Gogglebox Australia with daughter Kerry and granddaughter Isabelle. But in sad news, Emmie passed away on July 8, aged 96, after being diagnosed with dementia in 2023.
“Our Emmie, waited for me to come home for one last snuggle,” Isabelle, who had been on holiday in Europe, shared via Instagram.
“She was an orphan, a nurse, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, the oldest woman on TV, a great-grandmother, an author and so much more.
“Thank you for loving her as much as we did.”
Fellow Gogglebox cast members shared their condolences. “Our hearts are so heavy,” said Lee and Keith. “Emmie was our adopted grandmother.”
Matty said he was “honoured to have met her”, while Adam called Emmie “a star…
Katie Approves!
Eagle-eyed fans recently spotted that Katie Holmes – of all people! – liked a social media post that seemed to confirm her ex-husband Tom Cruise is officially dating actress Ana de Armas.
A cosy picture of Tom, 63, and Ana, 37, was shared on the Daily Mail’s Instagram page. Katie, 46, apparently liked the post before deleting the acknowledgement.
“Did anyone else notice that Katie liked this post,” queried one fan.
Katie and Tom wed in 2006 before splitting in 2012. She has raised their daughter Suri, 19, on her own since then.…
Sun Sets On Shirvo?
In news no-one saw coming, some Sunrise viewers are calling for Matt Shirvington to be replaced by Weekend Sunrise presenter David Woiwod.
David, 41, impressed fans earlier this month with his interview skills and chemistry with co-host Natalie Barr. He was filling in for Shirvo, 46, who was on annual leave. “Woiwod and Nat have an easy friendship and rhythm that she and Matt haven’t nailed yet,” one viewer shared on Media Spy.
“I’m starting to prefer Woi over Shirvo,” said another.
Despite this, an industry insider tells New Idea that Seven bosses aren’t looking for anyone to fill Shirvo’s shoes anytime soon.
“Matt isn’t going anywhere,” the source says.…
Wooed By A Hypnotist
New Idea hears that Jennifer Aniston is looking into a handsome man’s eyes and is feeling very, very … loved-up!
The Friends actress has been linked to celebrity hypnotist and life coach Jim Curtis. Last week the pair were spied boarding a luxury yacht in Mallorca, Spain, alongside Jen’s good pal, actor Jason Bateman and his family. They were also seen getting cosy in California last month and our source confirms that Jen, 56, is “really into this guy”.
A second insider adds: “Jen’s trying hard to not take this romance too seriously but she can’t help herself – she’s quite literally under his spell. Jim’s a great guy.”
However, there is concern in Jen’s circle that things are moving fast between Jen and Jim. Our source believes: “There are…
Wedding Clashers!
Everyone knows it’s not the done thing to upstage the bride. But Delta Goodrem suffered that exact fate recently when her ex-fiancé, Brian McFadden, tied the knot just days after her own nuptials!
Delta, 40, wed bandmate Matthew Copley in a secret Maltese ceremony on June 16, then enjoyed a lavish European honeymoon. Meanwhile, Brian, 45, wed lifestyle blogger Danielle Parkinson in Cornwall, England on July 5.
“Delta got her dream destination wedding and nothing could have eclipsed that,” a source tells New Idea. “She hardly thinks about Brian anymore, but it was epic to be blissing out on her honeymoon after her own perfect wedding – on his big day.”
A McFadden family insider insists the proximity of the Westlife star’s wedding date to his ex-girlfriend’s was “a total…
‘I’m Not You, Dad!’
He’s been labelled everything from a “chip off the old block” to “Lleyton’s clone”. But as Cruz Hewitt tries to carve out a successful tennis career of his own, the 16-year-old is said to be growing tired of the frequent comparisons to his famous father, Lleyton.
So much so that a frustrated Cruz was overheard snapping at his dad while competing in the second round of the Wimbledon boys’ singles tournament.
Lleyton, who won the Men’s Singles Title in 2002 when he was just 21, was trying to coach from the sidelines.
“I tried that!” Cruz shouted from the court before going on to lose the match, despite a valiant effort. Onlookers also revealed that at one point, a clearly irritated Cruz accused Lleyton of “acting for the cameras”. Another…
Erin Patterson Behind Bars
HER VICTIMS
Languishing inside Dame Phyllis Frost Centre in Melbourne’s west, Erin Patterson has spent her first week behind bars coming to terms with her new life. Main image of Patterson: AFP/Martin Keep.
She was whisked away to the maximum-security women’s jail in the back of a prison van on July 7, just hours after being found guilty of the murders of her former in-laws, Don and Gail Patterson and Heather Wilkinson, and the attempted murder of Ian Wilkinson.
The group had attended the infamous beef Wellington lunch at Patterson’s home in Leongatha, regional Victoria on July 29, 2023. Don and Gail, both 70, and Heather, 66, died in hospital just days after consuming the fatal meal. Ian, 71, was left critically ill before making a slow recovery.
While a…

COLLEAGUES SPEAK OUT
Former colleagues of Patterson, who worked with her as air traffic controllers in the early 2000s, have given a disturbing account of their time working with the now convicted killer.
They said she left her job at Airservices Australia in November 2002 after concerns about her workplace behaviour. Last week, The Australian reported that at one stage, a colleague had allegedly discovered her food had been tampered with, finding a blade from a pencil sharpener lodged in their banana.
“No-one could prove that, but she had a way about her that was off-putting,” another colleague told the publication.
ERIN TAKES THE STAND
It was an emotional and eventful eight days on the stand for Patterson. During her testimony, she admitted to lying to detectives, detailed her “neverending…
