This Week In… New Idea
Some of the most ordinary things in our homes carry the richest of memories. Like the handwritten cookbook on my mum’s kitchen shelf, passed down through generations, or the battered floral biscuit tin at my friend’s house. Her family received a bag of broken biscuits with their bottles of milk when we were growing up in the ’90s and I recall happy Saturday mornings picking through them when her parents allowed us. Then there’s Tupperware! Being sent off to school with a sandwich made with love, or Nan throwing all her Tupperware jugs into the bath so my brother and I could play with them! Margaret’s story on page 29 brought all that back for me, as she was a Tupperware lady for nearly 60 years! I hope it brings…
Deb Melts Down!
Deborra-lee Furness is on edge, as what would have been her 30th wedding anniversary with Hugh Jackman fast approaches.
“She has got plans in place to take her mind off it,” a source tells New Idea. “Her friends are also rallying around to make sure the date doesn’t get her down.”
Deb, 70, wed Hugh, 57, on April 11, 1996. They announced their separation in 2023, after 27 years of marriage.
“Deb once expected to be celebrating the big day with Hugh. Now she’s just trying to be kind to herself and get through it,” explains the source.
Adding to Deb’s woes is the fact that Hugh is seemingly living his best life as new love Sutton Foster’s cheerleader. In favour of taking on any new projects of his own,…
Marry In Secret!
Ada Nicodemou and James Stewart have sparked fan frenzy that they’ve gone and tied the knot just weeks after getting engaged!
Wedding bells were ringing, albeit prematurely, when the couple and Home and Away co-stars uploaded photos from a recent celebration to social media. Ada, 48, looked gorgeous in a white dress, and she and James, 50, were surrounded by their loved ones. These details had many of their followers convinced they’d secretly wed, and the happy snaps were from a reception!
A source tells New Idea that James and Ada are definitely “not husband and wife just yet. It was just a family get-together, although I can see why they sparked confusion.”
However, the source says when the pair do walk down the aisle, it will likely be in…
‘Half My Lung Is Gone’
7NEWS sports presenter Mel McLaughlin is overwhelmed by the messages of love and support she has received since going public with her lung cancer diagnosis.
Mel, 46, shared the news last week, after learning she had the condition in December. She has been off air since January. The tumour was detected at an early stage and Mel has already had it removed – along with half of her left lung.
“Recovery is slow, but good,” Mel said.
A lifetime non-smoker, she tragically lost her older sister Tara to the same disease in 2015. Tara was just 39 years old.
“It’s just very traumatic, it’s very triggering, it’s just a lot of emotions,” Mel added. “In our family, lung cancer meant death. We have one example, and we lost her.”

Get a Prenup!
Even though their six-year marriage ended in 2013, Erica Packer has remained close to her ex James. So much so, New Idea hears the model, 48, has warned the billionaire to lock down a “watertight prenup” following his recent engagement to American socialite Kylie Lim. “Erica is very protective of James,” our source reveals. “But since they split, his love life has been a disaster. From his bizarre engagement to Mariah Carey to this on-off situation with Kylie, Erica is concerned that James doesn’t know what he wants.”
Our source adds that, because Erica and James, who’s worth $5 billion, share three children together, she’s naturally pressing him to organise a prenup, purely as a security measure.
“She likes Kylie and thinks she’s good for James, but she just wants…
Backtracks On Feud
David Bowie’s daughter Lexi Jones has walked back from the claim her family “forcibly” committed her to a residential treatment centre in her teens.
The now 25-year-old, whose mother is model Iman, clarified the situation, saying, “My story was never meant to place blame on my parents. I love my parents deeply and I don’t hold resentment towards them.”
In an earlier Instagram post, the musician claimed she spent 16 months in treatment starting in 2014 – to address her depression, substance abuse and eating disorder issues – and missed her father’s final days. David died, aged 69, in January 2016.
“I never shared this to create a family conflict,” Lexi added.…
‘It’s All Lies!’
The world may currently be smitten with TV series Love Story – but Daryl Hannah is not a fan! The star recently penned a scathing assessment of her portrayal in the show, which focuses on the doomed, real-life romance between John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette.
Daryl dated John for five years before their romance ended in 1994, when he met Calvin Klein publicist Carolyn. Daryl is played in the show by Dree Hemingway.
“It’s not even remotely accurate,” Daryl, 65, stated in an essay penned for The New York Times. She accused the show, created by Ryan Murphy, of portraying her as “irritating, self-absorbed, whiny and inappropriate”. Ever since the show launched last month, some fans have demanded “justice for Daryl” over her unflattering portrayal in the series.…
‘We’re Getting Married!’
In a story of unexpected love emerging from unimaginable tragedy, two first responders to the Bondi terrorist attack are now engaged and planning their wedding.
James McIntosh and Alexandra ‘Lexi’ Edmondson, who had briefly met before the December 14 massacre, were brought together in horrific circumstances.
James, a content creator, and physiotherapist Lexi had crossed paths during a surf lifesaving course at Bondi Surf Club. Despite living near each other, a romantic connection never existed.
Opening up about their love story to The Australian, Lexi, 35, said: “We were never interested in each other in that way; he thought I was really young, I thought maybe he was married.” James, 46, found Lexi to be “really sweet” but, due to his confusion over her age, never considered her as a…
Meghan’s Panic Over Email Leak!
The Duchess of Sussex should be busy planning for her upcoming visit to Australia but, New Idea hears, instead, she’s fretting over a damaging email leak.
“She was horrified when word got out, ahead of the official announcement, that she would be appearing at a women’s retreat in Sydney,” our source says. “She likes to be in control and the chaotic announcement about her arrival was anything but polished.”
Meghan, 44, and her husband, the Duke of Sussex, 41, will headline separate events here, after they arrive in mid-April. Meghan is the guest of honour at the Her Best Life Retreat and gala dinner in Sydney while Prince Harry will speak at a workplace mental health summit in Melbourne.

Karl & Sarah’s Double Exodus?
After a revolving door of co-hosts, Today found stability in 2023 when it appointed Sarah Abo as Karl Stefanovic’s sparring partner. However, the brekkie show currently finds itself in a state of chaos, with sources telling New Idea that something of a “double exodus” may be on the horizon.
“The big question at Nine right now is, will Karl and Sarah even be sitting at the desk next year?” dishes our exclusive source.
Sarah will likely be off air from the middle of this year, after announcing that she is expecting her first child, a baby boy, with her husband Cyrus Moran. During the emotional reveal, Sarah, 40, spoke of her “bumpy ride” to fall pregnant, following years of fertility struggles.
It’s a joyous moment for Sarah and her family.…
